Your Law Firm's Domain Name: A Decision Worth Getting Right
Someone searching for a lawyer after a messed-up contract, a divorce, or a formal demand letter often types a name into a search bar before ever picking up the phone. For a law firm, the domain name is the first impression clients get, and it needs to be easy to remember, spell, and repeat to a clerk or colleague. Before you buy anything, think through how the name will hold up on your website, your business card, and over the phone.
.com, .ca, or Both
The .com is still the default for many firms, especially if part of your client base comes from outside Quebec or you handle matters across provinces. A .ca signals a clear Canadian base, which can reassure a more local or institutional clientele. If your budget allows, registering both keeps another firm from grabbing the version you didn't take.
Short, Clear Enough to Spell Over the Phone
Law firms get calls at tense moments: before a hearing, after a demand letter, mid-negotiation. Your domain name has to be dictated without confusion to an assistant or a stressed client. Avoid words that sound alike out loud and abbreviations that force you to spell everything letter by letter.
Accents and Hyphens: Simplify Early
A last name with an accent or a hyphen often complicates email addresses and domain names. It's usually simpler to drop accents and hyphens from the digital version, even if you keep them on your sign or printed materials. That avoids typos and extra versions you'd otherwise need to register.
City or Region: Helpful Until It Isn't
Naming your city or region can help a client looking for a lawyer nearby who needs to show up in person. But if you're thinking about opening a second office or appearing in other districts down the road, a name tied too tightly to one place can box you in later.
A Name That Works in Both Languages
Part of your clientele will search for an avocat, not just a lawyer, especially in commercial or family files. Pick a name that doesn't sound awkward in the other language and doesn't shift meaning once translated. Last names, initials, or neutral words like law usually travel better than something very idiomatic.
Check Elsewhere Before You Buy
Check the Registraire des entreprises du Québec to confirm another business isn't already using that name, and check the trademark register too, to avoid stepping on an existing mark. The Office québécois de la langue française explains the rules on French in a business name and signage in Quebec; check with them directly if you have a question on that front.
Law is a regulated profession, and some titles are reserved. Before putting a professional title into your domain name, check with your professional order about what's allowed instead of guessing.
Example patterns
- your last name + law
- your last name + lawyer
- law + your practice area (family, business)
- firm initials + law
- your city + lawyers
- law + your region
Examples of shape, not names guaranteed to be free: availability is checked on each name’s page.
What to avoid
- An acronym made only of your initials: hard to remember and hard to connect back to your firm without explaining it elsewhere.
- A term that's too generic, like simply law or justice: it gets lost among thousands of other results.
- Trendy wording or wordplay: it ages fast and undercuts the seriousness clients expect from a firm.
- A name too close to an existing firm's: risks confusing clients and running into an already registered trademark.
- A professional title used without checking first: confirm with your professional order before putting it in a domain name.
A trade governed by a professional order: your business name and your advertising have rules. Check them with your order before buying a name.

// questions
Frequently asked questions
Can I put the word lawyer or avocat in my domain name?
Check with your professional order first, since some titles are reserved in this regulated profession; confirm what's allowed before using that word in a name.
Should I buy both the .com and the .ca for my firm?
If your budget allows, yes: it keeps someone else from grabbing the version you skipped, and you can just redirect one to the other.
Is it smart to include my city in the name?
It helps if you expect to stay in one area long term, but think twice if you might open another office or appear in other districts someday.
How do I know if another firm already uses a name I like?
Check the Registraire des entreprises du Québec and the trademark register before buying the domain, on top of checking if the name itself is available.
My last name has an accent, what do I do for the domain?
Most firms drop the accent and hyphen in the digital version while keeping them on signage and printed materials.
